Pick Granola if your team wants one shared place for meeting notes, with templates, sharing and apps beyond the Mac, and you are fine paying per seat each month. Pick Whisperer if you work alone or in a small team on a Mac, want the audio and transcript to stay on your computer, and would rather pay $2.99 plus $14.99 once than a subscription.
Both apps take notes without a bot. Nothing joins your Zoom call. The difference is where the work happens and how you pay for it.
The short version#
Granola is a notes app first. You type a few rough lines during the call, and after it ends Granola's AI fills them out from the transcript. Notes live in Granola's cloud, where you can share them with teammates.
Whisperer is a Mac app that notices when a call starts, records both sides, and does the transcription and speaker identification on your Mac. After the call it writes a title, overview, decisions, action items with owners and open questions. The AI that writes those notes is your choice: the built-in model on your Mac, or a plan you already pay for, such as Claude or ChatGPT. See how meetings work.

Where Granola wins#
Granola is good at what it set out to do, and some of it Whisperer does not try to match.
- The notes editor. You write your own shorthand during the call, and Granola blends it with the transcript afterwards. If you think by typing, this feels natural. Whisperer writes notes from the transcript and lets you add your own notes to a meeting, but it does not merge your typing into the AI draft the way Granola does.
- Templates. Granola has note templates for common meeting types, such as a sales call or a one-on-one.
- Sharing and teams. Notes can be shared with a link or kept in a team workspace. Whisperer keeps everything on your Mac. To share, you copy or export.
- More devices. Granola has apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Whisperer is Mac-only and needs Apple Silicon and macOS 26 Tahoe.
- Integrations. Business connects to tools such as Notion, Zapier and HubSpot, and includes an MCP server so Claude or ChatGPT can read your notes.
Where Whisperer wins#
- Audio never leaves your Mac. Transcription and speaker identification run on the device. Recordings are kept as compressed audio with a retention setting you choose: never delete, or after 7, 30, 90 or 365 days.
- You choose the AI. The built-in Qwen3.5 4B model runs offline and costs nothing. Or sign in with your Claude, ChatGPT, Codex or Gemini plan, or paste an API key. If that AI is unavailable, the Mac takes over.
- It notices the call. Whisperer sees which app opened the microphone, so it knows a Zoom or Teams call has started, and asks "Zoom call started. Take notes?" Meetings on your calendar can record on their own.
- Speakers named from the invite. Speakers are numbered as they first talk, and one click names them from the calendar participants.
- Ask AI with sources. Ask a question about a meeting and get an answer with timestamps you can click.
- MCP built in. Turn on the MCP server and Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or ChatGPT can search your meetings, read transcripts and add notes. It is off by default and only apps on your Mac can reach it.
- Dictation included. Hold Fn, speak, release, and press ⌘V. Mid-call, the meeting pauses while you dictate and resumes after.
- One price. $2.99 plus $14.99 once, instead of $168 a year per seat.
Who should choose which#
Choose Granola if your team reads each other's notes, you want templates and a shared workspace, you use Windows or want a phone app, or you like typing your own notes during the call.
Choose Whisperer if you are on a Mac, you want your recordings and transcripts on your own computer, you already pay for Claude or ChatGPT and want to use that plan, or you want your AI tools to read your meetings through MCP. It also suits people who would rather not add another subscription.
Both apps leave consent to you. Whisperer shows a one-time reminder before your first recording. Tell people you are taking notes, and ask where the law requires it. More on that in meeting notes without a bot.

FAQ#
Is Whisperer a good Granola alternative?#
Yes, if you work on a Mac and mostly want notes for yourself. Whisperer records calls without a bot, transcribes and identifies speakers on your Mac, and writes notes with the built-in model or the AI plan you already pay for. It costs $2.99 plus a $14.99 one-time Pro purchase. If your team shares notes in one workspace, Granola fits better.
Do Granola and Whisperer both work without a bot?#
Yes. Neither one joins the call as a participant. Both capture audio from your own computer. Either way, you are responsible for telling people you are recording where the law requires it.
Does Whisperer send my meeting audio to the cloud?#
No. Audio stays on your Mac. Transcription and speaker identification run on the device. If you pick a cloud AI such as Claude or ChatGPT for notes, only the text transcript goes to it. You can keep a meeting fully local with the built-in Qwen3.5 4B model.
Does Whisperer work on Windows or iPhone?#
No. Whisperer is a Mac app for Apple Silicon and macOS 26 Tahoe. Granola has apps for Windows, iPhone and Android, so it is the better pick if you switch devices.
