How to Rewrite and Format Dictation with AI on Mac

Whisperer can reshape your dictation with an AI before you paste it. You pick a mode, such as Rewrite, Email or Format, and every dictation goes through it. By default the AI is Qwen3.5 4B running on your Mac, so this works offline with no API key and no per-word charge. You can switch to your own Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini plan if you prefer.

Speaking is fast, but spoken text is messy: filler words, run-on sentences, casual phrasing. Fast Polish already handles fillers, punctuation and paragraphs. AI modes go further and change the shape of the text.

The built-in modes#

Rewrite#

Makes spoken text read like written text. Cuts filler, fixes run-ons, tightens things up.

Before: "so basically what I was thinking is that we should probably go ahead and move the launch review to Thursday because Dan is out on Tuesday"

After: "Let's move the launch review to Thursday, since Dan is out on Tuesday."

Translate#

Speak in one language, get text in another. Quality is good for common language pairs.

Before: "Please send me the quarterly report by Friday afternoon."

After: "Bitte senden Sie mir den Quartalsbericht bis Freitagnachmittag."

Format#

Adds Markdown structure: headings, bullets, numbered lists.

Before: "the project has three phases first research second build third launch each phase takes about two weeks"

After:

Summarize#

Condenses a long dictation into the key points.

Grammar and Correct#

Fixes grammar and punctuation without changing what you meant.

List Format#

Notices when you're listing things and turns them into a real list.

Email#

Adds a greeting and sign-off and lays the text out as an email. See dictation for email.

Creative#

Makes the language livelier. Useful for marketing drafts.

Custom#

Write your own prompt and the AI follows it, for example "Rewrite as a short status update for my manager."

Which AI runs the modes#

The AI comes from the LLM page in Workspace, the same one that writes your meeting notes:

  • On this Mac: Qwen3.5 4B (about 3.2 GB download). Offline, free, the default and the fallback.
  • Your AI subscriptions: Claude, ChatGPT, Codex or Gemini, using the plan you already pay for.
  • API keys: OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini, stored in Keychain.

If you choose a cloud AI, only the text is sent. Your audio never leaves the Mac. More on the your AI page.

Trade-offs#

  • An AI mode adds a moment after you release Fn while the model works. For quick Slack replies, plain dictation with Fast Polish is faster.
  • A small local model is good at cleanup and formatting. For heavy rewriting or translation of long text, a cloud model you already pay for may do better.
  • The mode stays on until you change it, so switch back to plain dictation when you're done with a batch of emails.

Privacy#

With the built-in model, both the speech recognition and the rewriting happen on your Mac. Nothing is sent anywhere. Whisperer has no account, no analytics and no tracking.

Getting started#

  1. Get Whisperer on the Mac App Store
  2. Open the LLM page and keep the built-in model, or pick your own AI
  3. Open AI Modes and choose a Post-Process mode
  4. Hold Fn, speak, release, and paste with ⌘V
